Prioritize your priorities
We would all like to think that we spend our time on the things that matter most, but in reality most of us don’t. One of the best ways to give yourself the gift of time is to do the most important things first – every single day. When you are spending your most valuable resource on what really matters, you’ll be giving yourself the best gift of all.
Clear your plate
Establishing your priorities and arranging your schedule to make the best use of your time is only half the battle. Eliminating (or at least reducing) the things that needlessly steal your time is just as important.
What is wasting your time these days? Is it an over-abundance of emails that drown out the important messages in your inbox? Are you overwhelmed by commitments because you are reluctant to say no? Or are you simply spending time in worry and anxiety about what might be, instead of choosing to be grateful for what is? Clearing your plate (your desk, your calendar, the space in your head) is an incredibly powerful way to give yourself the gift of time.
Don’t be afraid to delegate
Letting go of responsibilities we are used to carrying isn’t always easy… or simple. But if you want more time, either to give yourself, or to give to others – delegating is the way to go. Anything that can reasonably be done by someone else is worth considering. Often, a skilled professional can get the job done in a fraction of the time. Why spend half your Saturday cleaning your apartment when a professional housekeeper can do it in an hour and a half? Why spend hours on tedious data entry when a trained virtual assistant could get it done much faster, often while you sleep.
Most importantly, what could you do with the time you gain?
What would you do with the gift of time? Would you move your career or business forward? Would you spend more time with friends or loved ones? Would you pick up that hobby you’ve been neglecting? Would you spend more time at the gym? There’s no right or wrong answer, of course. The choice is entirely up to you.
